Youth and Adult Education (EJA) is especially important today, with as aim providing access to school by public that for some reason was excluded, thus making it possible to make up for lost time in formal education field and in preparation for exercise their rights and duties as citizens. Present research has purpose of making some reflections about reading and writing in EJA. It presents as objectives to evaluate importance of reading and writing in the personal and social development of students, as well as highlighting learning difficulties. Relevance of study is evidenced when, in role of teacher of EJA, in Municipal School of Elementary Education of Congo-PB, institution researched, it was possible to observe difficulties presented in learning of reading and writing. Methodology used was field research technique, with use of a questionnaire. Twenty of the 55 EJA students were interviewed. It was found that, although they feel difficulty, students were able to overcome its and learn to read and write, despite their limitations in learning. Such learning can aid in improving interpersonal and professional relationships of these citizens, collaborating with their social development limitations of each student.
