Resumo:
The moment of childbirth, being the end of the gestational time, is the most expected for the pregnant and her family. This phenomena represents a period of major physical, psychological, social and cultural concerns, marked by the beginning of uterine contractions, followed by cervical dilatation and opening and consequently the exit of the fetus to the external environment. This work goals to assess the knowledge of the primigravidae about the labor. It is a field research, presenting a qualitative approach performed at São José do Rio do Peixe/PB City. The sample is composed by 10 primigravidae women previously registered and accompanied by the Health Department (Unidades Básicas de Saúde), at the urban zone of the city, over 18 years old and with proper cognitive ability to answer the survey. They were respected all legal and ethical parameters found in the resolution 466/2012 of National Health Committee. The data was collected and assessed by using the Content Analysis Technique developed by Laurence Bardin. It was noticed that their understanding was insufficient, and most of them presented confused and incomplete knowledge. The main sources of information they stated to use were informal such as internet and experience women reports, and, in the minority, the advices of basic health assistance professionals. In relation to the expectations, the pregnant women reported feelings like anxiety, and fear of what could happens in childbirth. Feelings like the joy of giving birth of their own sons and the wish of get to know them were also reported. Thus, it is concluded that it is important to form groups of gestational women aiming to discuss, through health information, subjects related to labor, and it can be worked since the second trimester of gestation, making the primigravidae feel safer about labor.
