Nowadays, technologies are present so naturally that, sometimes, we did not even
notice their presence in many daily activities. In the educational field, technologies
are encompassing, each day, greater proportions, being the most innovative
educational tool in constant evolution. Researchers create, often, innovative new
educational technologies. Assistive technologies are one of these innovations to help
people with disabilities in their education and in other activities of their lives. Based
on this assumption, this study discusses about the theme "Assistive technologies
helping the teaching of people with disabilities in higher education". This study
intends, as main objective, to verify if higher education institutions of Cajazeiras -PB
have assistive technologies that can help the accessibility and if they have qualified
staff to assist the disabled people in their respective courses. The research is
characterized as being applied, descriptive, quantitative and qualitative. The data
collection instrument used was a questionnaire constituted of eleven objective and
subjective questions, applied with coordinators of the five higher education
institutions of Cajazeiras-PB. The results of this study point to the necessity of
preparation of teachers in the use of assistive technologies, in a coherent way, with
the students' needs, the results also point that there are few students with disabilities
in higher education in Cajazeiras, and that the assistive technologies present in the
teaching institutions are scarce to this students. As contribution, it is pointed out the
importance of assistive technologies to help students with some type of disability in
their undergraduate courses, emphasizing that it is important to recognize the
importance of implementing and consolidating it to minimize some barriers for people
with disabilities. It is hoped that this research may encourage new researchers to
study this topic, as well as that it can contribute as a bibliographic source for other
academic works in some of these areas.
