Abstract:
The aimed was to characterize the structural and functional aspects of homegardens in two
rural communities in Cariri of the state of Paraíba. The survey was processed in the
Communities Olho D’água Branca (S07°30”27.4 e WO 36°54”16.6) e Cabeça Branca
(S07°31”10.5 e WO 36°56”03.4), both located in the municipality of Sume-PB. Were
characterized the floristic of the areas. The ethnoecological studies were worked through the
participant observation and of the questionnaire and interviews application. In the
homegardens the social actors showed strong connection with the areas of Caatinga. In the
areas a total of 127 species in 53 families was registered. 110 species were found in the
homegardens of the community Cabeça Branca and 96 community Olho D’água Branca.
The families with the largest number of species and genera were Fabaceae, Euphorbiaceae
and Anacardiaceae. The most frequent species in homegardens are potential food and
ornamental. Although fewer occur between all species present in all yards, the medicines
also had significant presence. In general, the data indicate homegardens in providing
resources essential to human survival. Thus, the sum of all the elements cited only come to
prove that these areas are available resources the survival of social actors present in areas of
the Caatinga Semiarid Paraiba.
