Resumo:
Business environment is highly competitive and enterprises of all kinds are always
making a great effort looking for new diffentials in order to gain a better participation
in the market. Activities for supporting logistics (storage and movement) are greatly
responsible for a storehouse for distribution of goods to work successfully. This study
aimed the analysis of both storage and movement of goods in the enterprise Distribuidor
de Alimentos Farias Ltda., established in Campina Grande City, Paraiba state, northeast
Brazil, by investigating the utilization of methods and equipments adequate to the
development of these activities, as well as identifying problems related to the warehouse
layout. The quantitative field study, exploratory and descriptive in character, was
carried out in the storehouse of the enterprise cited above, between 9th October 2007 and
20th March 2008, being data collection based on the technique of individual participant
observation, through a Direct Observation Form, and photographies. Data were
organized according with the activities of both movement and storage, showing and
classifying their main problems according with their frequency distribution.
Deficiencies related to the layout of the storehouse were also analyzed being each
problem discussed and indicated possibilities of solution. Relative frequency
distribution of data on both movement and storage was worked out in a graphic
presentation. Variables related with movement showed that 12,50% of problems
occurred at low frequency (rarely), 31,25% at a medium frequency (occasionally) and
50,25% at high frequency (very frequently) while those related with storage showed that
11,11% of problems occurred at low frequency, 44,44% at medium frequency and
44,4% at high frequency. Based on these results it was concluded that problems related
to movement were more than those related to storage. Thus, more adequate methods and
techniques were proposed in order to promote significant improvements in procedures
and activities of enterprise’s logistics in accordance with which is demanded by the
market.
