The studies that evaluate the physiological quality of vegetable seeds are considered of great importance, due to their wide use, and to present large areas of production in the country. In this sense, the objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of different substrates on emergence, on the emergence speed index, shoot length and roots and dry mass of seedlings of chilli pepper seeds (Capsicum frutescens L.). The experiment was conducted at the seedling nursery of the Ecology and Botany Laboratory - CDSA / UFCG. The design was completely randomized with 4 types of combinations of substrates, each tray had 4 replicates with 25 seeds per treatment. Totalizing 100 cells used per tray. The substrates used were: bovine manure (EB); organic compound (CO); humus (H) and washed sand (LA). The following parameters were evaluated: emergency, emergency speed index (IVE); length of seedlings (CP); and dry mass of the seedlings (DM). Based on the results, it was verified that the different substrates used influenced all parameters studied. Thus, substrates washed sand + bovine manure (T4) proved to be the most efficient in relation to emergence and the rate of emergence (IVE). Based on seedling length, washed sand treatment (T1) was the most effective, and in dry matter the best results were washed sand + humus (T3) and washed sand + organic compound (T2).
