The transport system of solid waste a municipality comprises the calculation of the required
fleet and route generation, and the vehicle routing lies like activity of great importance to
serving the population, contributing to urban cleaning and maintaining the quality
Environmental can be performed through mathematical or empirical method. In small towns
usually the empirical method, where the driver himself determines the itinerary of vehicles, is
the usual. This paper presents a case study of the service of garbage collection performed by
the Municipality of Sumé, Cariri town with about 16.000 inhabitants. To characterize the
problem was the mapping of sectors and routes for garbage collection area under study and
interviews with those responsible for the service, in addition to monitoring the vehicle in a
day's work. The results indicate the existence of a structure that meets the demand of garbage
collection in the city, but point to the need for greater investment in this sector, including the
urgency of the construction of the landfill in order to enhance the urban cleaning, generating
information that offer agility and refinement in defining routes, providing workers with
necessary equipment to perform their work better. Importantly, to be more efficient collection
is needed, beyond the involvement of the municipal administration, greater commitment and
participation of the population with adequate habits service, packing garbage properly in the
days and pre-established times, acting as well as fiscal cleaning and service quality, and
recognize the importance of professional cleaning urban and value formation recycling
cooperatives, incorporating the principles and practices of sustainability, in an ongoing
process of environmental education.
