The correct disposal of municipal solid waste is essential so that you can have a healthy environment, based on sustainable development, however, the deficiency in the collection and inadequate disposal of waste, which is released in the open in most cities, featuring a large environmental problem and a public health because solid waste is one of the major pollutants that affect water quality of surface and underground water sources through the production of manure, liquid resulting from the decomposition of organic matter from landfills and washing by rain water . Considering the trash one of the most serious problems faced by the people of the world, it is proposed to conduct a diagnosis of solid waste management in the municipality of Sumé - PB, since the process of collecting, sorting for recycling, and final destination. To examine this question, we opted for descriptive research, using a technique for collecting data literature, the non-participant observation through site visits at the dump and searched in the streets, and unstructured interviews with those responsible for management, and public servants involved with garbage pickers. The city had some failures in the management of municipal solid waste: failures occur in the phases of collection (no waste separation), transportation (technical study which the best routes) and final destination (waste deposited in the garbage in the open).
