Abstract:
This work focuses on the emergence of irrigation in Brazil, focusing briefly on the importance
of this practice for the country, more specifically for the semi-arid zones. Cite the agencies
responsible for implementation of irrigation projects, emphasizing the importance not only of
irrigation, such as the National Department of Works Against Droughts, which makes it a
historical, because it is an organ centenary and pioneer in several actions directed to minimize
the problems experienced throughout Northeast, as a result of prolonged periods of drought.
A brief analysis of the irrigated areas of public policies for irrigation and its importance with
emphasis on Irrigated Sumé and the reasons that led to the termination of their employment. It
was deemed important to the evaluation of public policies aimed at irrigation consider the
impacts of such policies on the new way of life of the farmer seated on irrigated land, as well
as the contribution of these policies to the development of semi-arid northeast. What are the
benefits and barriers that prevented the continuation of actions perimeters that produced over
a long period generating employment and income, and subsequently had paralyzed its
activities, in this case, there was a specific approach on the irrigated Sumé - the City of Sumé,
governmental actions directed to this perimeter in the past and the existence of current public
policies aimed at revitalizing the Irrigation Sumé.
