Resumo:
The present study is a qualitative research whose goal is to investigate the social representation of citizenship by high school students and to identify the practice used by them for accomplishing it. The methodological procedure was the exploratory one; the study is a comparative one and the data collection was developed through an auto apply questionnaire with open and closed questions. The study was carried out at the State School of Elementary and Secondary Education Professor José Gonçalves de Queiroz, located in Sumé-PB. The sample is composed of regular students from 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of Innovator High School, having the sampling collected in one group from each series. As a result of the research, it was realized that the samples showed controversy in meaning and understanding of the citizenship concept, even so, citizenship is considered fundamentally for everyone and essential for the maintenance of civil society. Nevertheless, respondents generally demonstrated an incomprehension about what citizenship represents and which are the core principles involving civil participation, as well as what actions correspond to these principles. Besides the students do not know how and through which means they become citizens likewise they do not participate or show interest in participating in social movements. The achieved results reveal a field of study still underexplored, therefore it becomes important for education itself, since it allows the student and the educational unit to have a greater representation of teaching, especially the Sociology subject.
