Abstract:
Risk is a variable that was always present in our daily lives, particularly as regards decision making. Understand and work ways to reduce the impact of this variable has become an important task for the survival of organizations. Thus, over time, scholars have developed informed approaches in statistical concepts for measurement and risk management in order to reduce uncertainty and make the most of the opportunities present in the stock market. From this, before the postmodern approach toward the losses, the Downside Risk, we sought to evaluate the energy sector's performance facing one of the most important indexes present in the Brazilian market, the Ibovespa. To do this, historical data of the shares were withdrawn in the period from 11 July 2011 to 11 July 2014 and subsequently analyzed using parametric statistics tools and non-parametric. With the results obtained from these tests, it was concluded that the performance shown by the sector and the index within evaluated period was statistically similar, ie basically equal.
