Abstract:
The aim of this study is to analyze the presentation of the “that” in compound sentence from
9th year textbook of basic education Living Together Portuguese. For this purpose, it was
expatiated about the syntax and the morphology of the “that” in compound sentence for the
theorist Perini‟s Normative Grammar and his descriptive syntax, describing how it is
presented in the study about the “that” in compound sentence from the Textbook, in addition
to suggest how the descriptive syntax can influence for a better teaching about the “that” in
compound sentence. Then, the theoretical assumptions by Joaquim Mattoso Câmara (2007)
about morphology were observed, and the ideas by Mário de Andrade Perini (2005) about
syntax also were considered. From integrated content in the four books collection Living
Together Portuguese, the 9th year textbook was selected as corpus for this research. It is a
documental stamp analysis with a descriptive and quant-qualitative nature. According to the
investigation, we conclude that 50% from textbook activities that approach compound
sentence, only 15% use the “that”, whereas 35% do not use the “that” in compound sentence,
that is, it only highlights other grammatical aspects. The analyzed 15% from textbook
activities use the “that” in compound sentence, adopting more the syntactic than the
morphologic criterion. It is because the conjunction and the relative pronoun are not
integrated as essential demarcations in the developed clause.
