Resumen:
In common sense, it is known that drought in the Brazilian Northeast is not just a climate
phenomenon of the semiarid region (dry climate region), but its context is much broader than
the environmental definition. It involves a series of economic and social deficiencies that
affect the most deprived of financial resources hinterland population to confront and combat
the impacts of drought. The main goal of this work is to answer whether the implementation
of the Project of São Francisco River Transposition is environmentally viable to combat
drought in the Northeast. In order to achieve these goals, great works of environmental
scientists, experts in water resources and sociologists in the Brazilian Northeast, have been
used as supporting references. Finally, the results showed that, to combat the drought
problem, there is no need to alter and destroy a great part of a biome and incur in activities
that will generate massive losses of millions of reais.
