Abstract:
Fossils are organisms that inhabited the earth in remote times and their remains
or activities were preserved in the rocks allowing these records to be used as
an object of study of Paleontology, and becoming a source of information
relevant to this science. Through these records it is possible to study the history
of planet earth, besides being also used as an educational tool. There are
collections of fossils that are available in museums and institutions. The
archaeological sites also have fossiliferous deposits. In the Northeast the
Araripe basin archaeological site is highlighted, which is divided into Crato,
Ipubi and Romualdo, however, the collection of this work was carried out in the
Crato Member. As a result, 42 limestone rocks containing fossil material were
found, totaling 52 fossils collected with representatives of fish, plants and
insects, with a greater emphasis on the species of fish collected. Thirty-two
specimens of fish were found, 28 of which are of the species Dastilbe crandalli,
8 specimens of insects, 10 specimens of plants and 3 unidentified specimens.
Among the plants was the representative of the conifers Brachyphyllum
obesum, in relation to the insects, the representative of the specimen
Mesoblattina limai showed greater emphasis among the insects collected. This
material aimed to increase the paleontological collection of the UFCG campus
of Cuité-PB and contribute to research and extension projects. These results
show the diversity and fossiliferous richness of the region.
