Resumo:
The present study aims to analyze the relationship between schooling and social ascension.
Its main objective is to investigate teachers' perceptions about the intrinsic relation
between school and the social ascension of the students of the popular classes. The specific
objectives were: To investigate the social contradictions that affect the students of the
popular classes; to know the perception of teachers of basic education about the
relationship between the process of schooling and the social rise of students of the popular
classes; to know the perception of higher education teachers about the relationship between
the schooling process and the social ascension of the students of the popular classes. As
methodological procedures, the research consisted of two stages, namely: bibliographic
survey with theoretical contribution in FREIRE (2017), SAVIANI (2009), MÉSZÁROS
(2008), LIBÂNEO (1995), FRIGOTTO (1999), and field research. The locus of the
research occurred in two institutions, a state school located in Sousa PB and a higher
education institution located in the city of Cajazeiras PB. The subjects of the research were
two teachers of the basic school and two teachers of higher education. It had as instrument
of data collection a structured interview and a semi-structured interview. Content analysis
was carried out and the approach was qualitative. Regarding the findings of the research, it
was possible to verify that in spite of their perceptions, a more critical and a less critical all
the teachers of both higher education and basic education consider schooling as a means
for the social ascension of the subjects of the popular classes.
