Resumen:
The biodiversity of the Caatinga, although rich in species, is the least studied among
the Brazilian natural regions and the conservation of this biome is necessary due to
the desertification process that is spreading in the area. This work deals with an
experience in environmental education with 13 students from the 5th grade class of
the Municipal School of Primary Education Tancredo de Almeida Neves, located in
the city of Cuité-PB, with the objective of planning, executing and evaluating a
pedagogical proposal. Trees from the Caatinga biome were used as examples to
bring the students closer to nature during four meetings, including lectures, field
lessons, drawings and play activities. The research uses a qualitative and descriptive
approach. As data collection instruments were used the participant observation with
annotations and photographic records of the activities, and drawings made by the
students of the school. The results showed that the theme was well received by the
students in the expository-dialogue class, establishing the value of the local
vegetation, and the resources appeared adequate to the theme and level of
education, with emphasis on the playful activity that brought motivation and the field
class where students perceived humans as part of the environment. Thus, using
these resources, it was possible to initiate a process of sensitization for the
conservation of the environment in order to maintain the sustainable quality of life of
the population through the relation man-nature-society.
