Abstract:
Medications are the main instruments for curing and prophylaxis of diseases; however, when its use is associated with substances such as alcohol, which can alter its functions in our body, it becomes a problem for health professionals and for the individual who may be at the mercy of an inefficient treatment and at risk of suffering from possible interactions that result .A common habit worldwide, drinking alcohol is a practice often neglected, since its acute and chronic effects, in the short and long term, can bring about losses that are sometimes irreversible. Alcohol dependence is a subject treated with great caution and delicacy, in the face of the obstacles inherent to this condition. In accordance with the methodology used and the sources of search of selected literary resources: Bireme, Google Scholar, Lilacs, Pubmed, Drugs, Science Direct and Scielo, we analyzed and selected some classes of commonly used drugs that have forms of interactions with alcohol (ethanol) of great importance and relevance. The association of alcohol with anti-inflammatories leads to gastric irritation and can progress to ulcers with hemorrhages. There is an increase in depressive effects in individuals receiving benzodiazepines, the interaction of ethanol with antimicrobials may lead to an antabuse effect and there is exacerbation of hypoglycemic effects in diabetic patients who are hypoglycemic agents, which constitute these as potential risk groups for drug interactions
