The medicinal plants have always had fundamental importance, being used throughout generations in the world. Today, even with the vast list of industrialized medicines available on the market the use of phytotherapy formulations such as tincture of Erythrina velutina (mulungu) is widely consumed by the population, commonly used for the treatment of anxiety and insomnia. The objective of this study was to develop a standardization for tincture production from mulungu stem bark, applying techniques for the characterization of macroscopic, phytochemical and physicochemical parameters. For the production of tincture, Erythrina velutina stem bark was collected at UFCG Campus Cuité - PB, of an adult individual, whose exsicata is deposited in the institution, under the number of 1181. The tincture was produced in triplicate by means of maceration and was submitted to phytochemical tests for the identification of secondary metabolites. The physical-chemical parameters evaluated were pH, density and dry residue, and the total polyphenols content. The results showed that the tinctures presented as a clear solution, dark greenish brown, homogeneous, with characteristicsmell and taste of the plant with the presence of Tannins, Alkaloids, Flavanoids and Phenolic Compounds, pH =5.37 ± 0.08; relative density = 0.8748 ± 0.0003 mg/mL and dry residue = 2.36 ± 0.40 %, the total polyphenols content showed an average of 0.66 ± 0.09 %. The data obtained, reaffirm the importance of standardization for the establishment of specifications for production procedures and quality control as a way to obtain a reliable, safe, effective and quality product and, consequently, avoiding risks to consumer health.
