Resumen:
Maternal and neonatal mortality has been declining slowly at the national and international levels. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the complications occurring during the pregnancy period, during delivery and after birth, have killed the lives of 800 women and 7,700 newborns (NB) each day, with about three million deaths in the first month of life. For this reason, the Ministry of Health has instituted among the strategies, such as the First Week of Integral Health, which includes among its axes the "Humanized and qualified attention to the pregnant woman and the newborn", which perpasses through the actions referred to in Agenda of commitments such as First Week Comprehensive Health, currently, 5th Day of Integral Health and home visit, which translates into a set of post-high health actions, to be offered to the binomial in the family health unit and at home. Objective: To analyze the care offered by the professionals of the Family Health Unit in the home visit at the First Week of Integral Health. Methods: Descriptive and exploratory study of a qualitative approach, developed in three Family Health Units in the urban area of Cuité, Paraíba, Brazil, with twelve puerperal women. The collection was carried out in the months of July to August, through a semistructured script for interview, the content collected was analyzed by the technique of content analysis. Results: From the empirical material emerged three thematic categories: 1. Difficulties presented during the first week of life of the newborn; 2. Actions taken by USF professionals during the home visit at the PSSI; 3. Strategies to improve attention to the mother-newborn binomial. Discussion: The main difficulties are related to breastfeeding and the performance of the hygiene of the newborn. The actions performed by the professionals were superficial, not meeting the needs of puerperal women. The proposed strategies consist of: performing qualified care, physical examination of the newborn, guidelines on breastfeeding, increasing home visits and that is performed by a multiprofessional team. Conclusions: It was possible to identify that the difficulties faced by the puerperae during the first week of the baby's life are related to breastfeeding and that the actions performed by the professionals are not able to meet the needs presented. In this sense, we see the need for an expanded look at the qualification of family health professionals about the importance of carrying out the visit at the PSSI.
