Abstract:
The process of aging is a universal reality, and this is associated with a higher prevalence of chronic diseases, degenerative, and limiting some of these and may restrict the elderly to the bed, generating several other complications the psychic level and social. Objective: To Investigate the difficulties experienced by the elderly bedridden at home and its impact on mental health. Methodology: This is a qualitative field research with descriptive-exploratory typology, developed in the period from April to may 2018, with nine elderly bedridden at home, who were registered in family health unit (USF), situated in Cuité-
PB. For the analysis of the empirical material used the technique of content analysis. Were respected all aspects involving research with human beings. Results: Three empirical categories were created. The first category was titled "The negative impact on quality of life of the elderly bedridden" where there was economic hardship, and changes in lifestyle resulting from physical limitations. As regards the second category identified symptoms of psychic suffering arising from the physical limitations of these elderly, motor/can verify that all showed symptoms of mental distress, because it showed high scores measured by SRQ-20. And the third category addressed the coping strategies of the elderly bedridden that are made through religious practices as a source of hope and strength to overcome obstacles. Conclusion: We feel that our study enhances academic understanding of the factors that the elderly bedridden biopsychosocial difficulties that impact in experiencing your mental health. This knowledge is useful for reasons of public policy, in order to address the factors that cause failure in this population, through disease prevention and health promotion. Without doubt, the social and health improvements in the promotion of a greater life expectancy are undeniable, but it is imperative that longevity will be accompanied by a better quality of life.
