Resumen:
With the advent of the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC) of the Federal Government, there
was an increase in the amount of great works of engineering infrastructure (ports, highways and
dams). With the growth of the mesh road in Brazil, it becomes necessary to intensify studies on
alternatives, conditions of implementation and control of road projects, especially those that cross over
areas of soft soils. This study aims to evaluate the applicability of expanded polystyrene (EPS) in
existing embankment on soft soils in the Work Adjustment BR 101, Lot 06, located in the city of
Goiana - PE, using the database of geotechnica! instrumentation installed, executive design and
results from trials of "Vane Test" and simple compression, aiming to develop more effective
procedures on executions and to control works on soft soils using EPS and propose suggestions for
improvements to the existing project. The results indicate the importance of evaluating the safety
factors adopted in the project as well as to study the mechanical properties of E P S in control and
execution of the layers that make up the landfill. The combined project with the mechanical properties
and stringent safety factors, along with a detailed execution control field leads to ensure the structural
and functional adequacy of the work.
