Résumé:
One has now been realized the need for new methodological resources in mathematics classes to facilitate students understanding of the contents covered in this area. Among these resources, one has as a possibility the use of manipulative material, such as Algeplan, which can facilitate the teaching process of manipulations of algebraic expressions. Therefore, the present research aims to investigate the potentialities and limitations of algeplan in solving problems of equations, as well as to evaluate the possibility of using this material as a methodological resource to develop the capacity to solve equations. To that end, such research was based on: (i) the studies by Allevanto and Onuchic (2005), Redling (2011), and Romanatto (2012), which discuss the use of problem solving methodology as a methodological resource for teaching of mathematics, specification on the elaboration and investigation of problems; (ii) in the studies of Silva (2004) and Lorenzato (2006), who talk about the use of manipulative didactic materials. Our study was carried out through a qualitative research, in one Public School of the state of Paraíba in Brazil, with students of the 9th grade. We used some stages of problem solving methodology, such as group: reading groups, problematization, observation and questioning, problem solving. We identified that, during the development of the activity, a group of students presented some difficulties regarding the basic notions of geometry; necessary prerequisites for understanding Algeplan, especially in manipulations of the sum square and the second degree equation. In our research, it was possible to conclude that Algeplan contributes to the process of teaching learning.
