The Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a grave and increasing public health problem and is being treated as a worldwide epidemic. Due to the increasing incidence of it in the last few years, it might cause complications that must be prevented. The primary health nurse is an essential professional in healthcare because they have competencies and abilities to minimize the complications the disease might have. With that in mind, the goal of this study was to evaluate nursing assistance in preventing and reducing the complications of the diabetes mellitus under the point of view of the nurses responsible for Family Health Care. This is an observational and descriptive study of a qualitative nature. Six nurses were interviewed in the city of Esperança/PB. The interview had a semi structured script. Data analysis was made through the Discourse of Collective Subject proposed by Lefèvre and Lefèvre. Since the elaboration of the central ideas, the results show that the nurses have some fragilities in comprehending the complications of DM. Being so, they neglect the effective execution of the Nursing Process in the care of patients with DM. A gap in education in health was noticed in the planning and execution of the qualified actions and dynamics, with methodologies that maximize the incentive to auto care. Familiar absence was one of the obstacles to adherence to treatment from the patience side, pulling away care objectives. It is vital that nurses realize the importance of enforcing the Nursing Process so to use this tool in favor of the effectiveness of care to promote health and prevent diabetes complications.
