Resumen:
Patient safety involves the proactive and proactive assessment of risks in health services, favoring the design and implementation of the necessary safety barriers. This involves identifying the incidents to investigate their causes and establishing measures to prevent their recurrence. The objective of this research was to evaluate the adequacy of the medical prescriptions of the University Hospital Alcides Carneiro (HUAC) to the patient safety protocol. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive study with a quantitative approach. Data were collected from January to March, 2016, through the completion of the Form of Analysis of Medicinal Prescriptions. After the collection, a database was built using Microsoft Office Excel spreadsheets. A total of 787 prescriptions were prescribed for 997 patients in the adult ICU, with 221 (28.08%) different prescriptions, which presented 2,177 prescription drugs, where the most commonly prescribed drugs were dipirone, ondansentron, enoxaparin, omeprazole and ranitidine. The results showed that the most frequent type of error in the prescriptions studied was the use of abbreviations, followed by prescription by brand name, absence in dose, dosage and route of administration. Its dosage was not observed in the prescription of 470 medicinal products and in 91 the route of administration were absent. Therefore, it is necessary to train employees who are directly connected to the patient, in order to elaborate and execute the prescription in the most correct way possible, thus reducing errors that can cause harm to patients.
