Resumen:
The growth of the elderly population is a notable problem, especially in Brazil. Parallel to this growth, we have the increase of the rate of individuals with chronic diseases, as well as the increase of the continuous use of medicines and, often, several associated medicines, besides the ignorance of possible interactions with foods. The objective of this study was to characterize the prevalence of drug - nutrient interaction in the medical records of the elderly hospitalized at the Alcides Carneiro University Hospital, Campina Grande - PB. The methodology consisted of the application of questionnaires, which was divided into parts, containing patient identification data, a clinical survey, and a food frequency questionnaire. Official literary sources were used to assess interactions between drugs and nutrients. The population studied in this study was composed mostly of female participants, with a low level of schooling and an average family income. Most of the elderly present risks of developing chronic diseases or were already affected by these diseases. It was also observed that although most of the participants in the study were "adequate", there was a great tendency to be overweight in both sexes. No care was taken with the drug-nutrient interactions, evidencing the importance of the pharmacist, who is the professional able to offer a care service completely focused on his patient and his pharmacological treatment, in order to help him in a Effective therapy.
