Rhizopus is a genre that causes a rare fungal infection called mucormycosis it has a high mortality rate which makes the small therapeutic arsenal for this type of illness an aggravating. It is in this context that natural products such as essential oils and terpenes, they have come to stand out as a therapeutic approach. Carvacrol is a monoterpene that has biological studies, such as antibacterial and antifungal action. In this way, this research has as the objective to investigate the action of carvacrol against Rhizopus species as well as the mode of action of this fitoconstituinte. To perform this study, the microdilution methodology was used in order to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). To evaluate the minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC), an aliquot of 10μL of each well where there was no fungal growth from the MIC was cultured into a Petri dish with sabouraud dextrose agar ASD. In the perspective of studying the mode of action, the ergosterol complexation test was performed. The MIC of carvacrol and amphotericin B were 64 μg/mL e 2 μg/mL, respectively, for all strains. The MFC of terpene was 128 μg/mL. The MIC in the absence of exogenous ergosterol was 64 μg / mL, and in the presence ranged from 512 - 1024 μg / mL. Therefore, carvacrol presented antimicrobial activity against Rhizopus species, the interaction with ergosterol present in fungi membranes is the possible mechanism of action of carvacrol.
