Klebsiella pneumoniae is a gram-negative bacillus member of the family Enterobacteriaceae, in which the main sites of action are the respiratory and urinary tract. In the face of the unbridled growth of self-medication, several microrganisms have developed mechanisms of resistance with greater frequency, in this way to make the treatment increasingly difficult, being necessary the research for new therapeutic alternatives more efficient. Several natural products have been studied, such as essential oils and monoterpenes, which have shown a very promising action against a large number of microrganisms.In this perspective, the objective of this work was to investigate the antimicrobial activity of citral against ESBL-producing strains of K. pneumoniae and to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of this monoterpene. For this purpose, the serial microdilution technique was performed at a ratio of two, starting at a concentration of 2040 μg / mL, and used the Brain Heart Infusion broth as the culture medium, with the last column being reserved for growth control microbial, where it also tested the viability of the culture medium. The experiments were prepared in triplicate and then incubated in the oven at a temperature of 37 C˚ ± 2 C˚ for a period of 24 hours where the evaluation of the assays was performed using the visual method using resarzurin as an indicator colorimetric method of growth. However, through the experiments performed, it was noted that citral monoterpene did not inhibit the growth of K. pneumoniae strains under the conditions and concentrations tested. Thus, it was observed that from the studies performed the phyto-constituent did not present antibacterial activity against the strains tested.
