Abstract:
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that promotes a serious metabolic dysfunction, being
multifactorial in origin and that affects a large part of the world population, both young
people as adults. According to data from the Brazilian Society of Diabetes the world order of
individuals with diabetes is 382 million. Among the types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2 are
the most frequent. Type 2 is the one with the highest number of recorded incidence, since this
type is related to factors such as obesity and overweight, which affect directly the secretory
capacity of pancreatic beta cells to release insulin into the body. Among the drugs used for the
treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, metformin is the most used (marketed in the form of
metformin hydrochloride), which presents low side effects and low risk, besides a proven
good efficacy when compared to other antidiabetic drugs used for treatment. The aim of this
study was evaluate the physical-chemical quality of metformin hydrochloride 850 mg
officinal tablets from four pharmaceutical laboratories (one reference drug and three generics)
marketed in the city of Caicó-RN, by means of tests recommended in the Brazilian
Pharmacopoeia 5th edition. Thus, with the accomplishment of this study it was possible to
observe that all analyzed samples were approved according to the specifications of
organoleptic characteristics, friability, hardness, disintegration, determination and dissolution.
For the medium-weight test only sample R did not perform within the specified parameters
and therefore failed. Samples G1, G2 and G3, because they were approved in all tests, show
themselves good quality drugs.
