Psychotropic medications are central nervous system modifiers that act on psychiatric illnesses in order to provide cure or stabilization of these clinical conditions. However, the irrational use of psychotropic drugs is considered a serious public health problem, due to the many damages that this practice causes the world population. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prescription and dispensing of psychotropic drugs of the users served at the basic pharmacy of the municipality of Nova Floresta-PB. Corresponding to a cross-sectional, quantitative-qualitative and descriptive study, data were collected during the months of October 2016 to May 2017, from the application of questionnaires. Revenues and revenue notifications were evaluated according to the information recorded by the prescriber and in the dispensing action of the medicines. We interviewed 176 psychotropic users in the municipality of Nova Floresta-PB. Female prevalence was observed (58.52%). The prevalent age group was adults, which corresponded to 72.72%, followed by the elderly (22.16%). The most widely used psychotropics were amitriptyline (15.42%), phenobarbital (14.43%), clonazepam (12.93%) and diazepam (9.95). There were 21 prescriptions with drug interactions. Regarding the prescriptions and the correct fulfillment of the prescription and notification of the prescription, it was found that all contained patient and prescriber information correctly, but 5.68% of the prescriptions had no posology and / or date. It was observed the need of sensitization of the prescribers in relation to the rational prescription, as well as the necessity of orientation on the part of the pharmacist with the users.
