The use of plants for therapeutic purposes is an old practice and to this day highly widespread.
However, it is necessary to determine the safety and efficacy of this products to ensure their
quality and avoid risks to the consumer’s health. Jatoba tincture is used in the treatment of
urinary tract infection. The present study aimed to determine the physicochemical and
microbiological parameters and to investigate the phytochemical groups of Jatobá tincture, as
well as to evaluate its antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, in samples produced by
CENEP - Nova Palmeira - PB. For the physico-chemical evaluation were performed pH, density
and dry residue tests. Phytochemical groups were identified through specific chemical
reactions, which characterize secondary metabolites. For the microbiological analysis, the pour
plate count test was used. For the tincture antimicrobial efficacy proof, the agar diffusion
method was used. The results show the jatobá tincture as a homogeneus, dark reddish brown,
blurred solution pH (5.04), density (0.9234 mg/mL), dry residue (3.66 %), both within the
brazilian legislation standards. The tincture showed antimicrobial efficacy against E. coli, with
inhibition halos averaging 11.6 mm. The evaluated charactetistics are important to determine
the product quatlity and to carry out further stability studies, besides showing the antimicrobial
potential against E. coli, the main bacterium causing urinary infection, serving as an incentive
for new studies with chemical and pharmacological approaches to jatobá.
