Abstract:
Biofilms of chitosan, chitosan/montmorillonite and chitosan/bentonite prepared in the absence and presence of ibuprofen were obtained by solution and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and UV- vis spectroscopy. The type of clay, the method of ibuprofen incorporation and the biofilm drying conditions were studied. The results indicated that the chitosan/clay interactions were effective and that bionanocomposites were obtained. Biofilms presented clay agglomerates, however when the montmorillonite clay was employed these agglomerates were smaller and better distributed in the polymeric matrix. Regarding the form of
incorporation of ibuprofen and the drying conditions of biofilms containing the ibuprofen drug it was observed that the dissolution of ibuprofen in ethyl alcohol before it is incorporated in chitosan biopolymer as well as the drying of biofilm at room temperature followed by drying in oven with air forced circulation resulted in biofilms with compact surface without pores. Regarding the evaluation of the
release of ibuprofen was demonstrated that the incorporation of sodium Cloisite ® Na+ montmorillonite clays and Argel 35 sodium bentonite in chitosan resulted in a release rate slower ibuprofen and montmorillonite Cloisite ® Na+ promoted drug controlled release more effectively due to higher accommodation of the drug molecules in the galleries of montmorillonite.
