Abstract:
This study aims to determine the importance of the study of greatnesses and
measurements in the Youth and Adult Education (YAE), in addition to identifying the
potentialities and limitations of the use of didactic material handling in teaching values
and measures with students of this modality of education. The research was guided
on the following problem: "What learning difficulties are there in education of young
people and adults in relation to content greatnesses and measurements? ". The study
is based on the following theoretical sources: PAIVA, MACHADO and IRELAND
(2007), FARIAS (2012), HADDAD (1994) and FONSECA (2012), which deal with
education for young adults as a central point of their research as well as from sources
such as PAULA (2010), RODRIGUES (2007), FLEMMING (2005), among others who
explore the subject of greatness and measures through didactic materials. The work
was developed in the qualitative research. A field work in a public school in the state
of Paraíba was carried out with a teaching class (YAE), which in the year 2018 studied
the the final grades (5th to 8th grades), where an activity was used that approached
the theme "Length study using manipulative materials". For this activity was used
popsicle sticks, metric tapes and the palm of the hand to make measurements. After
the application and analysis of the activity, we highlighted some limitations regarding
the use of teaching material, more specifically in relation to the fact that we can not
use it in all mathematics classes, because the material addresses a small part of the
subject matter greatnesses and measurements, besides requiring a significant time
demand for its execution. On the possibilities, we highlight the socialization of the
groups, the interaction of content delivered in the classroom with the students’ daily
living, as well as the development of mathematical ideas. It was identified that its use
can mediate the construction of knowledge and can serve as a method to diagnose
difficulties presented by the students. After analyzing the activity performed with the
(YAE) class, it was concluded that the use of didactic materials in the teaching of
greatness and measures helps in the development of mathematical concepts, making
it a teaching and learning tool for the teacher. Another observed result has a
connection with the interaction of the research participants, the activity with the didactic
material led the students to exchange ideas on their own, being themselves builders
of their knowledge.
