INTRODUCTION: Care is the development of actions, attitudes and behaviors based on scientific knowledge, experience, intuition and critical thinking, performed for and with the patient, for the promotion, maintenance and / or recovery of their health. Despite all this logical proposal about care in the nursing process, professionals nowadays seem to be reacting to the greater demand of machinery with less regard for the needs of people who are connected to the machine. In this context, care comes down to the application of a technical procedure in order to fulfill a mechanistic objective, such as puncturing a venous access, applying a medication or performing a certain examination, leaving the human being in the background. Given this, it becomes evident the importance of expanding on the meaning of care and on what needs care, since this only happens from the needs of the patient perceived by the professional. OBJECTIVE: To investigate nursing care in the preoperative and postoperative periods according to the professionals' discourse. METHODOLOGY: This is an exploratory research with a qualitative approach conducted with nursing professionals working in the surgical clinic of a hospital in the interior of Paraíba. The results were analyzed using the content analysis technique proposed by Bardin. RESULTS: From the results obtained, seven thematic categories emerged, namely: The approach to perioperative patient care is based on humanization; Preoperative care involves technical actions ranging from admission to referral to the operating room; Postoperative care is directed to ensure continuity of care and avoid complications; Light-hard technology instruments are not used for care; Hard technologies are applied, using their own hospital service devices; The care is to welcome, pass security and have empathy for the patient; Caring is abdicating one's personal life to be with the other. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: Thus, the present study consists of an information apparatus to support nursing care to patients who are hospitalized in the pre and postoperative periods, since it is the nurse's responsibility to substantiate, disseminate and articulate the nursing care. knowledge as a starting point for reflection that leads to practical understanding in a more integrated and reflective way.
