Abstract:
Over the years, social and environmental problems have been increasing since, due to the increase in population, mainly in urban centers, and as a consequence of the lack of planning and environmental management, there have been several problems, especially those related to basic sanitation. Therefore, the present study aims to analyze the socio-environmental impacts resulting from lack of basic sanitation in the Várzea neighborhood in the municipality of São José de Piranhas-PB. In this area, the lack of basic sanitation, more precisely that of sanitary sewage has produced negative environmental impacts, compromising soil conditions, the environment, causing visual impacts on "future residents", as well as being an area of possible infectious diseases for the resident population in the neighborhood, as well as in the surrounding neighborhoods. The activities responsible for the impacts relate to the lack of sanitary sewage, urban cleaning and solid waste management, and urban drainage. These actions are caused mainly by the lack of urban planning, mainly the implementation of infrastructure equipment, which contributes to generating impacts. The study is based on the deductive method and using as research techniques, the observation as well as the documentary and bibliographic research, the trip to the field to record the images, the elaboration of the map by the application Qgis, SIRGAS 2000, Zone 24S, plus Google Earth images to identify the study area. The results obtained from the observation of the area show that these impacts related to lack of basic sanitation in the local area have contributed to deterioration of the area, causing visual and environmental impacts, besides compromising the quality of life of the population through infectious diseases, that is , damaging the ecosystem as a whole. However, some suggestions can be presented to reduce the identified impacts, as regards sanitary sewage would be of paramount importance to the adoption of adequate management programs, either with the implantation of the collection network, or even the construction of a sewage treatment system , regarding solid waste and garbage, it is important to highlight the importance of selective collection and recycling as mitigating factors, as far as urban drainage is concerned, it is worth noting the importance of the rainwater collection network to receive these waters and to be destined to appropriate locations.
