The management of pain in the neonate is complex and includes elements for the client, to health professionals and their families. In this perspective, the nursing staff plays a key role in controlling pain and reducing the suffering of the newborn through the use of technology, which has provided an increase in the survival rate of newborns until recently considered unviable. This study aimed to verify the nursing technologies used in pain management in newborns at a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This is a quantitative, descriptive and exploratory study in Elpidio de Almeida Health Institute, between June and July 2016, with the data collection instrument a structured questionnaire developed by the researcher. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software version 21.0. The characterization of the population related to the identification and pain management in newborn, was carried out by descriptive statistics (absolute and relative frequency), the ratio of professional conduct was subsequently verified on the pain in the newborn, as well as the use of nursing technologies according to socio-demographic and professional variables. In the present study it was observed that the majority of nurses are female, with an average age of 38 years. With regard to pain management, all the nursing staff recognizes that neonates feel pain and thus perform the evaluation of pain in newborns routinely. It was noticed that the use of pain scales is not part of the routine of the institution where it was held research and cry was the parameter used by the nursing staff to recognize the pain in the neonate. Regarding the use of non-pharmacological measures, all nurses said they had knowledge of these measures and to make use of these, the most used: KMC, small package and nurturance, however, most of the nursing staff do not make use of shantala and unaware balneotherapy. However, there is a need for these technologies are performed systematically and more frequently, and therefore it is necessary to broaden the discussion on this topic from the continuing education in intensive care for the newborn services.
