Abstract:
Currently, condoms are proven to be the only effective contraceptive methods for HIV / STI / AIDS prevention and unplanned pregnancy at the same time. In contrast, it is noted that several religions are opposed to its use, based on arguments of interference in the natural process of human reproduction. It is evident that there are still differences of opinion between religious leaders and health professionals regarding the use of condoms, and these are two figures considered by women as a reference in health-related issues. Therefore, this study aimed to know the influence of the religious leader and health professional on the decision making of women in relation to the choice of male and / or female condom use. It is an exploratory-descriptive study of a qualitative nature, methodologically based on historical and dialectical materialism. The research was carried out with 15 women attending religious institutions and basic health units, three religious leaders and three health care professionals of the city of Guarabira - PB. After the data collection, the empirical material analysis was started by the discourse analysis technique proposed by Fiorin. In this context, from the existing contradictions, it was possible to arrive at the essence of the concrete thought, visualizing three analytical categories (1. Dialogues and monologues in relation to the choice of the condom, 2. Difficulties faced by health professionals during family planning, and 3. Paradigmatic changes: little religious interference in the decision making process of the choice of condom) and eight empirical categories (1.1 Responsibility of the choice regarding the use of contraceptive methods, 1.2 Knowledge of the women about the opinion of the health professionals of the basic health units on the Use of condoms 1.3 Women's knowledge of religious leaders 'views on condom use 2.1 Resistance to condom use 2.2 Religion as an obstacle to family planning implementation 3.1 Religious leaders' reflections on the use of condoms Active, 3.2 Condom vs. promiscuity and 3.3 Religion x uncontrolled sexual behavior). This study made it possible to elucidate that although religions maintain the traditions, it has exerted little influence in the choice of the condom by women. However, health professionals have played an important role in public health in relation to family planning, since women reported knowing the importance of using condoms as a contraceptive and preventive method to STI / HIV / AIDS and using them / not using conscious way.
