Resumen:
This research aims to analyze the environmental problems caused by the landfill of St. Joseph
of Piranhas and its implications for the residents who live around it. This work brings some of
that willingness to discuss solid waste in São José de Piranhas-PB and its consequences. The
population increase associated with their way of living currently leads to serious problems in
relation to high production of waste, causing serious problems to the environment. The
overpopulation and the current lifestyle of companies, especially urban have contributed
significantly to increase the production of solid waste, thereby promoting various types of
problems to the environment. The lack of specific legislation by August 2014, caused the
waste produced by domestic, industrial, medical and agricultural activities were discarded in
certain places without any preparation to receive them. The methodology used is based on a
descriptive, exploratory study of quantitative and qualitative nature. Data were collected from
semi-structured interviews with the research subjects. Analysis of the data indicates that the
landfill scavengers in the study believe play an essential work in the preservation of the
environment, since they remove tons of garbage for recycling. The collectors have garbage as
a source of survival, it was found although the majority are male, have low education,
collecting various materials weighing on average between 200 and 300 kg, getting with them
about a minimum wage.
