Resumo:
According to WHO land transport accidents (ATT) are a public health problem worldwide. It is estimated that by the year 2020 these events will assume the third leading cause of death worldwide. The states of the northeastern region of Brazil have high mortality rates due to this cause and there is a need to deepen the studies in order to generate data to support public policies. Objectives: To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of traffic accidents in the state of Paraíba. Method: This is a descriptive observational study with longitudinal data collection; The research scenario was the state of Paraíba which has a population of 3,766,528 inhabitants according to the 2010 Census conducted by IBGE. To calculate the mortality rate, the resident population informed in DATASUS was used for each year. Data collection was performed in the DATASUS and SIM databases responsible for recording deaths. Results and discussions: The specific mortality rate from motor vehicle traffic accidents, calculated by dividing the number of deaths recorded and the resident population, is used to measure the relevance of traffic accidents from a public health point of view, not reflecting the total situation of traffic violence. The health regions with the highest rates were the first region with 8.1 / 100,000 inhabitants; The sixteenth health region appeared in second place with a rate of 7.2 / one hundred thousand / inhabitant. Final considerations: The present study found that, as in other Brazilian states, TTA are among the first causes of hospitalization and death in the state of Paraíba. He also identified that the main risk categories of death are motorcyclists, car occupants followed by pedestrians.
