Brazil currently occupies a prominent position on the number of elderly people in the country. Aging without disability, preserving the autonomy becomes an indispensable factor for a good quality of life and autonomy, dependence and independence become concepts widely discussed by health professionals who work with the elderly person. The present study sought to evaluate the physical condition and functional as the Basic activities of daily living (ABVD) in institutionalized elderly in the city of Cajazeiras-PB, located high paraibano. It is a descriptive, exploratory study with quantitative approach. To do so, KATZ index was used for verify degree of functional capacity as the realization of the basic activities of daily living. The results were processed and tabulated by the program SPSS 16.0 for Windows ® ®. The data showed that most institutionalized elderly were female, aged between 60 and 100 years, with 37.9% had more than 80 years. As the basic activities of daily living, the shower was more committed to 75.8% followed by 68.9% transfer, dress up 65.5% and go to the bathroom 48.2%. On the other hand, the results showed that the elderly present best activities implementation capacity of saluting with 37.9% and 27.6% power. One of the elderly respondents, 89.65% needed assistance in whole or in part. With this result, emphasized the need to support, in addition to improving the qualifications of caregivers in order to promote quality of life for the elderly who live in ILPs.
