Abstract:
Suicide represents an extremely complex behavior in our society, multifactorial in nature and
represents a serious public health problem. Although many scientists challenge themselves to
studying the subject, this is an increasingly common event in our society, with increasingly
growing indexes. The Brazil is among the ten countries in absolute number of suicides and the
Northeast region, among other regions, with the largest percentage growth. Thus, this study
was born from the interest and need to get to know this data in a place of Paraíba, with the
overall objective to deepen knowledge about suicide in this region. As for the methodology,
an observational study was conducted, the ecological type. It was studied the epidemiology of
suicide in the 15 counties that comprise the 9th Administrative Region at Paraíba, in a time
span of 19 years (1996 to 2014), was compared those numbers to the municipality of João
Pessoa, State of Paraíba in the Northeast region and the national numbers. The results showed
rising suicide rates, with significant male predominance in all levels studied. We highlight the
variation of suicide rate in the municipalities that are object of study, within the range of time
placed and there is also a significant number of autointoxication with pesticides in the cities
studied. About the critical analysis of the results, we underscore the need to understand the
suicide as the product of various determinants of health-disease process that are puzzled on
the causes of the event. In addition, it is evidenced the importance of conducting new studies
to the clarification of the phenomenon, since new analyses can subsidize improvements in
health network, assistance and training of health workers.
