Abstract:
This research analyzes the historiography of drought: weather phenomenon of the design
dry as historical fact, political and social of the Northeast region of Brazil. On this topic
there is already a relatively wide bibliography. However, some historians argue that, just
from 1877, the drought ceased to be interpreted only as weather phenomenon and came
to be considered as a national political issue. These discussions are presented in the works
of Lúcia de Fátima Guerra Ferreira, "Raízes da Indústria da Seca: o caso da Paraíba",
and the Master's thesis of Durval Muniz de Albuquerque Junior, "Falas de astúcia e de
angústia: a seca no imaginário nordestino - de problema a solução (1877-1922)". In this
paper, according to the thinking of historians mentioned, we analyze and understand how
the drought, which was seen as a weather phenomenon, came to be perceived as a political
construction. The work begins by presenting the social position of these historiographical
productions, from Michel de Certeau; then discussed the concept of history of
Albuquerque Júnior and Ferreira; and, finally, treated in a dry design of each author.
