Resumo:
The safety of the patient is a notorious concern in the health services, being essential for the quality of the service. In the Intensive Care Unit, it is necessary to take a comprehensive look at the promotion of a safe environment for the patient, given the complexity of this sector. Several equipment and instruments are used for monitoring and care, being essential for the therapy. The removal of them as a result of psychomotor agitation may cause health damage. The use of mechanical restraint allows you to restrict the movement of the individual, in situations that there is an indication, using it as a protective measure. Thus, the study aimed to analyze the knowledge of Nursing professionals about the use of mechanical containment in patients in the Intensive Care Unit. This is a field and documentary study of an exploratory and descriptive nature and a qualitative and quantitative approach. Data collection was performed through a semi-structured interview with the nursing professionals and a form for checking the patients' medical records. The analysis of the qualitative data was carried out by anchoring in the thematic content analysis and the quantitative variables, using the descriptive statistics. All items set forth in Resolution 466/12 of the National Health Council, which regulates research with humans, were obeyed in this study, and data collection only began after authorization from the ethics and research committee. The results were categorized into four stages, expressing the sociodemographic data, the knowledge of the professionals, the registration in the medical records and an educational booklet, elaborated for the professionals on the rational use of the mechanical containment. In view of this, it is noticeable that nursing professionals had a general knowledge about mechanical restraint, but in a simplified way, being broader and more comprehensive only in relation to the circumstances expressed by the patient and the benefits and risks of this practice, showing flaws in understanding the relevant legislation on the subject. The deficit presented in the nursing records, in the patients' medical records, related mainly to the nursing prescription and documentation of the care provided, was notorious. The booklet was developed due to the detection of the need of awareness of the professionals interviewed about this subject. In short, its evident that the knowledge of the professionals about mechanical containment was limited, and informative updates are necessary to raise awareness about this issue.
