Population aging has been growing gradually in the country, along with this process come some modifications. Population and governments should be able to assist this public in order to promote, through the implementation of public policies, a good quality of life. At this stage, there is an increase in non-communicable chronic diseases, and the main one is dementia, and as a preventive measure or early identification, the Family Health Strategy (FHS) nurse in nursing consultations can use the state mini-exam (MMSE) and make the appropriate guidelines and referrals. The objective was to identify the prevalence of elderly people at risk of dementia in the municipality of Cajazeiras-PB. This is a cross-sectional prevalence study, with a descriptive character and a quantitative approach. To perform the collection, a semi-structured questionnaire composed of objective questions was applied and the MMSE, with elderly Cajazeirenses registered in the Basic Health Units of said city. Statistical analysis was used (measures of central tendency, Standard deviation), using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences - SPSS version 20.0. The study obeyed the precepts of Resolution 466/12 of the National Health Council, which regulates the research with human beings, being approved in the ethics committee of the Federal University of Campina Grande - Training Center of Teachers, under nº. 2.517.912. As results and discussion, one can see that the world scenario has remained and the female sex among the elderly stands out, it can reaffirm that women have a higher survival rate compared to men, but are more apt to acquire chronic non-communicable diseases. The majority of the elderly are between 60-69, are illiterate or do not remember how long they studied. The use of the MMSE made it possible to verify that the elderly have a good orientation, language and recent memory, has a deficit of attention and recall, that is, late memory. It can be concluded that the use of the MMSE is a fundamental strategy for nurses to use in the nursing consultations in the FHT in order to detect early dementias of any type, and to perform the necessary interventions and referrals.
