Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious-contagious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, its form of transmission is through the air, from the cough or sneeze of an active carrier of the bacterium, which launches droplets contaminated by the bacillus in the external environment. Although old, and with known treatment, TB still represents a serious public health problem in several countries. The prevalence of tuberculosis is directly related to the social conditions in which the population lives. Prisoners are exposed to several factors that contribute to the spread of TB, so they are more likely to develop the disease. The objective of the study was to analyze the knowledge of Primary Care nurses about the control of tuberculosis in the penitentiary. This is an exploratory research with a qualitative approach, carried out in the Municipality of Caicó. Empirical data were analyzed using the Content Analysis technique. This research was elaborated from the analysis of the interview of four participating nurses, thus, the prerogatives of Resolution Nº. 466/2012. In the sociodemographic aspects, it was evidenced that all the nurses entered the labor market young. In the context of tuberculosis, all expressed to have some training course, in this way, were identified important themes linked to the recognition of disease control measures. The educational measures were recognized as important, despite the difficulties of applying them in the penitentiary scenario. Regarding the limitations, interruptions in treatment and social stigma were the main obstacles to TB control. Regarding the potentialities, health education and interventions in the prison environment were the main actions for the control of TB by the BFHU. Nursing in Primary Care finds a broad panorama of action in the control of tuberculosis, not only the prison population, but the all entire population in general. When investigating the knowledge of nursing professionals regarding the control of tuberculosis in the penitentiary, it was evidenced that the professionals recognize this place as a source of dissemination of the disease and reported the need for expansion of actions and interventions aimed at persons deprived of their liberty.
