Resumen:
Introduction: Sleep is essential for the child's physical and psychomotor growth and development. Recent research has shown that sleep problems are among the most common complaints throughout childhood, making it important to perform the assessment of changes in sleep behavior in children. Objective: To characterize the sleep pattern in children from 0 to 3 years who attend a model nursery in the interior of Paraíba. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional epidemiological study in which 47 children were investigated. Two instruments were used to perform data collection, one for screening for sleep disorders in infants and early childhood (0-3 years) - '' Brief Questionnaire on Sleep in Children (BQSI) '', and a Formulary for Characterization of Sleep participants. Results: A majority of the 44 children (93.6%) of the study attended the day care center on the 5th day of the week and 30 (63.8%) of them attended the daycare center for more than 6 months. Forty-two (89.4%) of the children studied were singled out by parents / caregivers as not having a problem if they slept. Co-bed and nocturnal arousal rates were 44.7% (21) and 53.2% (25), respectively. Considering the criteria adopted by the BQSI to characterize the sleep problem, it was verified that no studied child wakes more than three times a night, nor do their awakenings last longer than one hour; On the other hand 2, 4.3% of them have total sleep time less than nine hours. Conclusion: Because of the scarcity of studies on the subject and the neglect of professionals in investigating the quality of the children's sleep during care, it is clear that it is important to investigate more about infant sleep, since this can lead to several Disorders that may harm not only the child but also the whole family involved.
