Resumen:
Burnout syndrome (SB) is a result of the chronic stress with occupational character. It is characterized by three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and low professional achievement. Its main manifestion is lack of energy for work and personal activities. SB mainly affects the professions that require interpersonal relations and for this reason this research was carried out based on scientific articles that studied higher education teachers. The present study is an integrative review, which selected a sample with 8 articles published from 2007 to 2017. Data bases were used: Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS) and International Literature in Health Sciences (MEDLINE), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO) and Public Medline (PUBMED). This study aimed to answer 3 guiding questions: What is the profile of the teachers affected by SB? What are the strategies used in preventing and coping with Burnout? What are the consequences of the syndrome for education institutions and teachers? It was found that most of the articles only managed to answer the guiding questions in a superficial way and the prevention and coping strategies were not reported in neither of the articles analyzed. It was verified that burnout in higher education teachers still needs to be studied in more detail. Moreover, teachers will be able to gain more knowledge about this subject and its consequences. In this way, they may develop methods and coping strategies according to their individualities.
