In Brazil, the psychiatric reform has been accompanied by many changes in the field of mental health, including family involvement in treatment as an essential element, along with the Psychosocial Care Centers to have an essential role in the process of receiving users in mental illness and their families, aiming at family reintegration, professional and social, directly contributing to an improvement in the quality of life of these people. In this sense, this study has the general objective to investigate the resilient characteristic of families living with the reality of a relative in psychological distress. This is a qualitative descriptive study aimed to describe and understand the topic in question, from a semi-structured interview tool applied to family caregivers of CAPSi Viva Gente users located in the city of Campina Grande / PB. The survey was conducted in the month August 2016, with the willingness nine family caregivers. For the analysis of the empirical material, we used the thematic content analysis technique proposed by Bardin. After the collected interviews, three categories were outlined: "The family and the challenge of living with a mental disorder," "mobilizing resources and resilience generators" and "When the grace generates competence": tracing ways to overcome. " It was identified that the process of caring transfigures is a mission sometimes difficult, however over time, respondents had an optimistic and hopeful attitude in overcoming adversity and try to keep a positive family relationship based on love, respect , faith, solidarity and companionship. Thus, the study revealed that the family and society are not yet fully prepared to face the complex process of rehabilitation of people with mental disorders. However, the family reflected changing attitudes and personalities, significant in the evolution of better living and way of doing things with your relative with psychological distress, allowing the identification of resilient characteristics, and enhancing the ability to overcome and adapt to adversity, accepting differences and making family life more light and happy.
