Abstract:
Sepsis can be defined by the presence of a life-threatening organic dysfunction, secondary to a
dysregulated respond of the host due to an infection, whether caused by viruses, bacteria,
fungi or protozoa, and characterized by various clinical manifestations. This aggravation is an
important health problem in Brazil, including public and private services, with high costs of
treatment and mortality. Due to the high sepsis morbimortality, the quick identification is
essential. This study aimed to analyze the knowledge of the nurses professionals and medical
of the Intensive Care Unit about sepsis. This is a methodological and descriptive development
research, with a quantitative approach, performed at the intensive care unit of the Regional
Hospital of Cajazeiras, located in the city of Cajazeiras, in the state of Paraíba. The population
of this study was composed of nurses and doctors working in the adult intensive care unit of
this health unit. The data collection consisted of two moments, in the first one, a invitation
was made to the professionals to participate in the research and the presentation of the
questionnaire and in the second one, was systematized the assistance protocol of sepsis. All
items set forth in Resolution 466, of December 12, 2012, of the National Health Council,
which regulates research with human beings, were obeyed. It was noted that most nurses
professionals and medical were out of date on the new sepsis classification and that simple
prevention actions such as hand washing and use of personal protective equipment, were
mentioned by less than half the professionals. The sepsis care protocol was systematized
based on existing protocols. This study may contribute to the knowledge about sepsis and
septic shock and also suggested that a care protocol can be a principle of planning and
continuous improvement of a highly complex care process, put into practice.
