Truck drivers play an important role in the Brazilian economy, since they are responsible for
shipping charges, thus ensuring the supply of goods businesses. But they are still undervalued
and submetem- to poor working conditions, which contributes to the development of
occupational stress. The present study aimed to determine the occupational stress in truck
drivers. It was a field study, with descriptive qualitative approach. The survey was conducted
with truck drivers in a beverage distributor located in Cajazeiras-PB, which has 14 drivers.
Thus, the sample consisted of all motorists this company. Data collection was carried out
between the months of June and July 2014, through a semistructured interview. The findings
relating to the profile of the participants were analyzed descriptively and the organization of
the discourse generated by the interviews took place through the technique of the Collective
Subject Discourse and in the end, we obtained 08 collective discourses. The study was
approved by the Ethics Committee of the Faculty Santa Maria, under protocol 680 981. The
results showed that the main stressors of drivers are the interpersonal relationship with the
client and helpers, problems with the truck and the fact that sleep outside the house. Despite
the difficulties reported in the survey, motorists have effective self-control strategies to cope
with the pressures from work. The physical and psychological changes that the profession
may ultimately trigger, according to the perception of most drivers do not perceive their
activities as harmful to health. The research showed that the presence of occupational stress
among study participants is present and constant, but at a low level, so it does not prevent
them from carrying out their activities. Finally, it is believed that by revealing the
characteristics and contradictions that permeate the work environment of the driver, allowed
herself the knowledge about the reality of working conditions this professional, which may be
useful in the search for strategies to mitigate stress this occupational class workers and
promote a better quality of life.
