Abstract:
The present work has the objetive to study the performance of an
electrodialitic mixed reactor to desalinate the whey milk by electrodialysis. The reactor
was developed in the desalination laboratory/ of the Chemical Engeneering Department.
It was fitted with two pair electrodialitic membranes showing a total area of 352 cm2 with
sheet of titanium platiniced with 2,5 u Pt electrodes and its volumetric capacity 500 cm3.
The performance of system was evaluated with three electrical potential 20, 40 and 60
volts. The data to electrical potential mencioned above of current density, ohmic
resistence, extraction rate and energy consumption were compared. The electrical
potential of 40 volts presented better conditions for some whey milk samples. The results
showed that occured more energy consumption when was used the electrical potential of
60 volts. The samples was collected from ILCASA - Dairy Industry of Campina Grande
S.A.
This work can be improved if the number of membranes in the reactor are
increased and differents conditions in term of flow rate and potential electrical should be
applied to obtain a reasonable current density for differents whey milk samples quality.
